Systematic Review: A Structured Approach to Evaluating Educational Technology Initiatives

Key to the success of educational technology initiatives is the rigorous evaluation of new platforms. This is especially true of larger, institution-wide efforts. This session discusses the Pennsylvania State University's cross-disciplinary approach to assessment of new technology, using a process called systematic review, to prepare for a large-scale implementation of a university-wide lecture capture platform. We will highlight how systematic review works and its impact on team formation and processes; assessment approaches, including triangulated data collection and meta-analysis; and the development and implementation of translational resources targeted at faculty, administration, and staff.Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key actors in creating cross-sectional working group to explore learning technology implementation needs that provide resources for multiple stakeholders
  • Outline strategies to implement change; identify key obstacles and potential pitfalls
  • Discuss a translational approach to assessment that allows teams piloting new technologies to quickly incorporate information and research into usable data for the teaching and learning community
